Reading – Success for your Child
Dear Parent / Carer
Research into educational achievement clearly shows that a reading child is a successful child. Reading helps to improve vocabulary, writing and concentration. In addition, reading opens minds to world cultures and allows your child to develop a full and active imagination. These skills are essential for success in all subject areas. Research has found that children who do not read are more likely to underachieve in school and struggle academically.
To further promote the importance of reading, from November all students will be expected to carry a reading book in their bag. Students will read their chosen book for pleasure daily. There is a large selection of books in the school library or students can bring a book from home. Finding time to discuss reading with your child, will encourage them to find a book that they really want to read.
In order to accurately determine your child’s reading ability, we have attached guidance on how to access their reading age on class charts. This is only visible to you, your child and their teachers. Reading ages help us to put support strategies in place for our weaker readers and also help us to keep track of students reading ability as they move through each academic year.
Reading regularly has the power to improve your child’s chances of educational success enormously. We are also keen to develop a love of books and reading in our students, and with your support, we believe that this is achievable.
Yours faithfully
A Chorley
