Our subjects

Overview

George Salter Academy has 13 departments responsible for the subjects taught. The subject range at the Academy is designed to ensure that our students acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes which will equip them to enter adult life and then world of work.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8)

All students are taught the following:

Core Subjects: English, Mathematics and Science

Foundation Subjects: French, Product Design & Engineering, ICT, Religious Education, History, Geography, Art, Music, Drama, Dance and PE

Additional Subjects: Personal, Social and Health Education; Citizenship; Careers

Students awarded levels by the teacher assessment in all subjects by the end of Key Stage.

Key Stage 4

Year 9

All students are taught the following:

Core Subjects: English, Mathematics and Science Options Humanities, Performing Arts, Art and Technology

Additional Subjects: Personal, Social and Health Education; Citizenship; Careers

Years 10 & 11

All students study: English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, PE and Personal, Social and Health Education (including Religious Education and Careers).

Where appropriate, students will be given the opportunity to achieve an additional GCSE in Statistics during their Mathematics course and Media Studies during their English course.

The hallmark of the Key Stage 4 curriculum is CHOICE. All students choose two examination courses from the following free block subjects: History, Geography, Religious Education, PE, Double Science, French, Spanish, Urdu, Punjab, Bengali, Arabic, Music, Dance, Business Studies, Drama, Food, Graphics, Textiles, Resistant Materials.

They also choose one examination course from the following vocational block subjects: Business Studies, Health and Social Care, Travel and Tourism, BTEC PE and Sport, Art & Design, BTEC Music, BTEC Drama.

Triple Science is also offered in this block for students seeking to specialise in Science at Post 16.
