Physical Education

GCE AS and A Level

A Level PE gives students the opportunity to build on the practical and theory skills developed at GCSE or Level 2. Students will gain insight into current sporting issues, how talent is developed and the effect that recreational participation can have on international success.

This course enables practically able students to develop their sporting skills as well as their knowledge and understanding of their sport’s technical, tactical, physiological and psychological demands. Students who are interested and play regular sport will become inspired and enthused through their A Level PE studies.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of a grade C or Level 2 pass at GCSE PE or BTEC L2 Sports Studies
  • Minimum of a grade C in GCSE English Language, Maths and Science (particularly Biology)

Progression routes from this course

A Level PE can lead to progression into the Sports industry, including careers in: teaching, coaching, personal training, sports development, sports science, nutrition, sports physiology, sports psychology, biomechanics, sports analyst and many others.

AS Modules/Units

  • Section 1: Exam Assessment – Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport
  • Section 2: Non-Exam Assessment – Practical performance in physical activity and sport

AS Assessment

  • Section 1: 2hr written exam (84 marks) worth 70% of AS
  • Section 2: internal assessment with external moderation (90 marks) worth 30% of AS

 

A2 Modules/Units

  • Section 1: Exam Assessment – Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport
  • Section 2: Exam Assessment – Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport
  • Section 3: Non-Exam Assessment – Practical performance in physical activity and sport

A2 Assessment

  • Section 1: 2hr written exam (105 marks) worth 35% of A Level
  • Section 2: 2hr written exam (105 marks) worth 35% of A Level
  • Section 3: Internal assessment with external moderation (90 marks) worth 30% of A Level
