Cambridge IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English learners develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively in both speech and writing. They learn how to employ a wide-ranging vocabulary, use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.

Entry requirements

In order to continue your studies at Salter Sixth (GSA) you will need to achieve a grade C in English at GCSE level. For the English IGCSE grade C to be awarded, a student must have a qualification in Literature.

Progression routes from this course

Achieving the grade C will enable you to continue your studies to A Level standard and on to university. It will also provide you with the qualification that most colleges or work environments require.

L2 Modules/Units

  • Paper 1: Reading Passages (Core)
  • Component 4: Coursework Portfolio (Core)
  • Component 5: Speaking and Listening Test (Core)

L2 English Assessment

  • Exam Component – Reading Passages (Core) 1 hr 45 mins. This component is set and marked by Cambridge. This component is eligible for grades C–G and is worth 40% of the total marks
  • Component 4 – Coursework Portfolio (Core) This component is assessed by the teacher and moderated by Cambridge. This component is eligible for grades A–G and is worth 40% of the total marks
  • Component 5 – Speaking and Listening Test (Core) Approx. 10–12 minutes. This component is assessed by the teacher and moderated by Cambridge. This component is eligible for grades A–G and is worth 20% of the total marks
